A Hot Trend For 2006 – Internet TV

The term Internet TV may refer to either of two things. Internet TV may refer to a set top box that allows users to view Internet content on their television. Alternatively it may refer to television shows and channels that are broadcast over the Internet allowing you to watch your favorite television channels or new channels that you wouldnt ordinarily receive through your terrestrial television channels.

Internet TV is still a modern technology and, as such, there are regular improvements being made that enable easier access, greater quality footage and other features. Its possible to find most of your favorite television and satellite channels on the Internet that transmit simultaneously on the Internet. It is quite easy to find access to these stations for free and completely legally. Alternatively, there are also new stations that arent available except on the Internet or new content provided by existing television stations. The use of internet TV broadens the entertainment capability by giving the viewers more channels equipped with more of the shows that people really want.

You will need high speed Internet access and a reasonable computer to ensure that you receive a good quality of footage. However, apart from this you do not need any more equipment. Previous problems have been that the cost and the difficulty of setting up an Internet TV station have made it unfeasible to do so. However, the technology required for video streaming has become more easily accessible and more affordable. As more and more people become aware of internet TV the funds being appropriated to the concept are increasing making it even easier for small TV stations to set up online and provide high quality television online.

One emerging method to help Internet users access and watch Internet television is a peer-to-peer network. P2P streaming enables users from all over the world to share image files with one another, including live TV action. The more people who share a particular channel, the better the quality usually is. P2P streaming looks set to present excellent options for the future if any new developments are not introduced first that will take away the need for P2P.

Another award comes to Midsummer House this year in the guise of the BMW Square Meal Award for Best Out-of-Town Restaurant 2005. Midsummer House is in good company, the previous winners of this award being Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons (2001), The Waterside Inn (2002), The Vineyard at Stockcross (2003) and The Fat Duck (2004). This award is particularly special as it’s decided not only by the Square Meal team of reviewers, but also by their readers, who provide Square Meal with their own verdicts on restaurants around the country.

Having also been awarded its second Michelin Star this year, Midsummer House has firmly established itself on the culinary map.

Midsummer House is the only additional two-star restaurant in this years guide and remains the only Michelin star restaurant in East Anglia. Midsummer received its first Michelin Star in 2002 and the team has been working towards receiving this second star ever since. Having recently undergone a major refurbishment and having new menus created, Midsummer House certainly deserves this prestigious accolade.

Cliffords cooking is based upon a sound grounding in French technique and he constantly seeks to improve and innovate: low temperature cooking, jellies, foams and unexpected contrasts of taste, texture and temperature. A research kitchen has recently been added to the building in which Clifford experiments with new ingredients, processes and dishes. A plasma screen has also been installed in the private dining room so guests can watch their choice of dishes being prepared, a rare opportunity to watch the man of genius at work.

Chef/Patron Clifford, who started his career as a kitchen assistant at Canterbury College comments, I have worked towards this award for many years and am delighted that along with my team all our efforts have been recognised.

Virgin Coconut Oil: The Elixir for Health.

Coconut trees can be found in almost all of the 7, 107 islands of the Philippines — a hot, humid, and tropical country located in Southeast Asia. For centuries, the inhabitants of these islands have turned to the coconut tree — the so-called Tree of Life — as a source of materials for shelter, food, and alternative medicine. The coconut tree is called Tree of Life because almost all of its parts can be utilized. The trunk is used as lumber; the woven leaves are used for roofing; and even midribs from the stems are brought together to form a native broom.

On the road to Germany 2006 World Cup the qualifiers from the African region and Ivory Coast leaded by Henri Michel, prepare themselves in Paris against the soccer team of Chile.

With 7 games won, 1 draw and only 2 losses, in the overall qualify standings; the Ivory Coast seeks a great friendly match up to organize their final details on the road to the World Cup. An interesting game that will definitively show us as soccer fans and sports betting crew, that they are ready to rumble in Paris and Germany as well.
Didier Drogba, an inspirational captain that leaded the team to their first time participation in a FIFA World Cup tournament, is one of the keys to the finalizing preparation game on May 30.

The Ivory Coast, who is in group C, will play in Paris, against a team that didnt reach a space in Germany 2006; but is going with a great potential squad to play. Chile showed their courage and good gaming against the 2 time World Cup winner Argentina, in the qualifiers. On 2 occasions, Chile wonderfully scored adding a point to their starting round against the big favorites. Unfortunately, in the next round, after playing against Paraguay and Uruguay, the Chilean dream disappeared; ending in the replacement of coach Juvenal Olmos for Nelson Acosta.

Chile with a great soccer technique, featured in 7 FIFA World Cup tournaments, being the last in 1998. La Roja, as known in Latin America and among international soccer andsports bettors, are more than prepare to play this friendly match up as good as it gets closer to Germany 2006.

This game is really interesting, due that Ivory Coast will debut in the FIFA tournament against Argentina and Chile played a great game against them before. This game will let us know, more about the new faces in the World Cup, with a lot of expectations from the Ivory Coat Soccer Federation and fans in general.

Road to Germany 2006, this game is a must to see, enjoy and bet on.

n sands of Acapulco the number one tourist destination in Mexico. Unlike everybody else, in Acapulco the National squad was there to get in tune early for the most important soccer competition in the planet. In Acapulco the squad received a lot of support from their fans that gave a boost to their morale.

Pavel Pardo said: “The most important thing for me is that the Mexican people are 100 per cent behind the national team. At the end of the day, you’re not just representing one sector of society; you’re carrying the hopes of 100 million Mexicans.”

The Tricolor as its called in Mexico spent about five days of hard work on the beach. They did the hard physical work in Acapulco to head back to Mexico City with some good fitness work behind them. The next few days should see the players enjoying considerably more time with the ball.

Theyre getting ready to head to Europe in the final stage of their preparation for the Soccer World Cup. They will face France on May 27th one of the most important friendly games of the squad.

On the other hand, France coach Raymond Domenech will take just his squad of 23 players and nobody else to a FIFA World Cup training camp later this month. Domenech, who has until 15 May to unveil his final list, said no reserves would be invited to the camp from 22-26 May in the French Alps resort of Tignes.

“I thought about it carefully and I don’t think it would be a good thing to bring players who would need somebody else to get injured to make the squad,” Domenech told French radio channel RTL.

Coach Domenech wants to avoid what happened in France 98, back then six players were told to leave France’s training camp at the last minute.

The French team is preparing to face Mexico on May 27th in a game thats expected to be one of the most difficult friendly matches in their World Cup preparation; theyll have the opportunity to measure against another head of group, and a different style of play than the European soccer.

Most sports books will certainly have a line for this exciting friendly match that will meet two very good soccer teams and hopefully allow the fans to enjoy a very good game.

Internet Banking could help with your tax retuns

One of the most useful things about Internet banking is that once you have your account information on your computer, you can export it into financial programs such as Microsoft Money and Quicken, to better manage your various household accounts. This can be particularly useful at tax time, if you export your account details into a tax calculator program such as TurboTax.

However, getting the software and your Internet banking to talk to each other can sometimes be easier said than done. While many banks (especially Internet-only banks) are good about this and offer an easy download link to save your online statements onto your computer, others offer only a very basic Internet banking service.

If your bank doesnt produce export files, you may have luck with asking your software to access your Internet banking account directly, giving it your username and password (it goes without saying that you shouldnt give these details to any software you dont completely trust).

If that still doesnt work, then dont worry. Search the web for the name of your bank followed by export software, and you will often find that someone has produced a free script that you can use to save the information from your banks website. These scripts generally work by first asking you to save pages from your Internet banking using your web browsers Save button or menu option, and then taking the files produced and converting them into a format that your financial software can understand.

If all else fails, call up your bank and ask them to help you. If they refuse, and it is really important to you, you might consider opening an account at an Internet bank, where they will be much more understanding towards these kinds of requests. You might also want to complain to the company that makes the financial software, as they may be able to persuade (or even help) the bank to do something about the problem.

Finding A Local Florist – Sorting Out the Weeds of Deceptive Flower Shop Phone Listings

You want to send flowers to Aunt Sally in Newark or your sister Susan in San Antonio. You decide to look up a local florist there, hoping to get more personal service or even save a few bucks by avoiding the “middleman.” Normally, a simple call to directory information or an online search would be all it takes, but in the case of florists, the results could be deceiving.

Many of the online resources are overcrowded with national marketers and wire services rather than the real local florists you’re seeking. Some companies have built hundreds or even thousands of web pages referencing various cities across the country just to show up in so-called “local” searches across the country. Others are simply paying to be on top. This makes life difficult, as it is very hard to tell the difference between a genuine family flower shop and a national fictitious “florist” with local phone numbers which are actually forwarded out of state.

While these deceptive phone listings have officially been banned in many states as intentionally misleading, the laws are all too often not enforced. As a result, fictitious florist phone listings have become commonplace, especially with the growth of online yellow pages. Flowers With Gifted Elegance of Randolph, NJ and All American Flowers of Mount Laurel, NJ are two of several telemarketing companies employing this tactic to make money while providing a disservice to unsuspecting consumers. By purchasing local phone listings under many different names, they hope to lead customers into using their services.

The strategy first surfaced in the mid-nineties. States such as Virginia and Delaware recognized the threat and took action. Other states have followed, but the practice continues today relatively unhindered. Companies in New Jersey, Wisconsin, and the state of Washington purchase phone numbers all over the country, and place those numbers in local white and yellow pages. The listings usually have the name ‘Flowers Of (Town or City)’ or ‘Flowers in (Town/City)’, with a local area code and phone number but either no address or a bogus address. Consumer groups agree it’s misleading at best and usually a ploy to con people into ordering. In the end, customers may face unnecessary extra charges, poor quality, or both. Here’s how it works and what you can do to avoid it.

The Phone Listing Scam

Take a quick trip over to whitepages.com. Do a search for business type “florist springfield,” and don’t even both entering any city or state. You’ll see that about five of the first listings are for “Florist in Springfield” or “Florist of Springfield” in Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Missouri. They all display local phone numbers, but none of them list an address, a common indication of a deceptive listing. To find out more, we called each of the numbers. Four were answered by a recording referring to “Our Flowers with Gifted Elegance.” The fifth was answered by a similar operation which refused to provide a physical address and claimed it didn’t allow ‘walk-in’ customers. In short, all five were bogus. The problem isn’t limited to Springfield. One florist we interviewed knew of at least seventeen misleading florist listings in its local yellow pages.

According to customers, the real disservice isn’t the false listing; it’s the poor service. These companies often charge between $8.99 and $14.99 for taking each order and redirecting it to a real local florist. The service fee is on top of the flowers and local delivery, or worse yet is deducted from them without the customer’s knowledge. The Better Business Bureau report on Flowers with Gifted Elegance, at bbb.org, notes an unsatisfactory record due to unanswered complaints. A search at RipOffReport.com reveals the number of complaints, including reports by people who’s flowers were never delivered.

Avoid Being a Victim

There may be no easy way to recover from being a victim of this kind of advertising deception, but avoiding it is fairly easy.

- Trust your hometown florist. Most are seasoned professionals who can deliver your gift almost anywhere, know the better flower shops in other areas, stand behind their service, and guarantee your satisfaction. In the unlikely event any problem does arise, you’ll be glad you’re working with a reputable local business that wants your continued patronage.

- If you shop online, choose a nationwide florist that proudly displays a toll-free phone number, contact address, customer satisfaction policy, and industry credentials. Check for a secure order form with “https” in the address, and consider placing your first order by phone to ensure customer service people are easy to reach.

- Get advice from friends, neighbors, or business associates. They’re often the best source for choosing the right florist.

- If you do search for local florists online or in phone books, be sure to avoid those with generic names that include the town or that can’t give you the address and directions to their local store.

The vast majority of florists are hard-working, family-owned businesses dedicated to serving you. So, you can send flowers with confidence when you turn to the local florists you know and nationwide florists you trust. Most can deliver your bouquet around the corner or across the country, within 24 hours or less. No wonder, flower delivery is still one of the most reliable and popular ways to show you care. Still, like any industry, the flower business has its share of ‘bad apples.’ So, think twice before you play Russian Roulette with the phone book. Count on your local hometown florist and the established nationwide florists online.

A Page From Betty Crockers Cookbook

Recently, while sitting in my chair drinking the last of my breakfast coffee, a thought staggered into my mind. I must confess most thoughts are quite lonely once they enter my mind, but this one had a nagging element to it.

Experience has taught me I should never give in to these strange trespassers. Every time I entertain any of them, Im the one getting burnt.

This time was different. Dont ask me how it was different, or how I knew it was different, it just was. Of course, looking back I could have been wrong.

The thought: why not surprise my wife by baking her a cake?

I know what youre thinking. I thought the same thing when this suggested itself to me. But, the more I thought about it, the more delightfully delicious it sounded. How can anything go wrong if I am doing it for my wife?

The only question I needed to answer was what kind of cake should I bake.

After a long period of ruminating, I settled on a lemon sponge cake with peanut butter icing. This was going to be the best surprise my wife has ever received from me.

Sitting in a prominent place in the kitchen is my wifes Betty Crocker Cookbook. I dont know how long she has had that book, its been in our kitchen for as long as I can remember which really may not be that long when I come to think of it.

I took the book, sat in my favorite chair and opened it. How do you read a cookbook? As I leafed through it, it did not have any rhyme or reason to me. In musing on the book I said to myself, how important is it to follow directions?

Placing the book back in its revered spot, I concluded that since this was my cake, I didnt need help from anybody else, particularly Betty Crocker. This is the difference between men and women. Women need a lot of directions, while men enjoy the liberty of doing their own thing.

I knew exactly what I wanted. A lemon sponge cake, with peanut butter icing. What could be simpler?

Retrieving a large mixing bowl, I assembled all the ingredients I needed; flour, sugar, eggs, milk and baking powder. Everyone knows you cannot bake without baking powder.

I have no idea what baking powder is, except when you bake you use baking powder.

I put everything in the mixing bowl. The only thing I wasnt quite sure of was the measure, but how hard could that be anyway? Betty Crocker mentioned a cup of this and a cup of that, but never defined what she meant by a cup.

I went to the cupboard and looked at all the cups. There were all kinds and sizes of cups and I did not know which one to use. I eyed a large coffee cup and said to myself, this will do just fine.

I dumped 6 or 8 cups of flour into the mixing bowl, I cant remember how many. Then I cracked a dozen eggs and put that into the mixing bowl as well. Pouring a quart of milk into the mixing bowl, I whipped everything into a nice batter.

This was to be a lemon sponge cake but I could find nothing marked lemon in the cupboard. I opened the refrigerator, and as luck would have it, I found a quart of lemonade.

I poured this concoction into the largest cake pan I could find. As I was about to put it into the oven, I remembered the baking powder. How is this cake going to bake if it doesnt have the baking powder?

Setting the cake pan down, I grabbed the baking powder and liberally sprinkled it on top of my batter. I have no idea what baking powder does but I put enough on my cake so it would do a good job.

Into the oven the cake went, and with a flick of the wrist I turned the temperature to 450 degrees. Remembering this was a big cake, I readjusted the temperature to 650.

The bigger the cake the hotter the oven, is what I always say.

Now all I needed to do was wait for my cake to bake. As I was waiting, I heard rumblings coming from the oven but just chalked that up to a good cake baking.

I guess I fell asleep, because the next thing I knew there was a strange odor permeating the air. It smelled a little smoky and then it dawned on me. My cake, its done.

What I pulled out of the oven did not resemble any cake I had ever seen. It looked like a burnt pancake, twice the size of the cake pan, with some kind of disease on the surface.

No amount of peanut butter icing in the world could camouflage this disaster.

It was about this time I began reassessing the idea of reading directions. Maybe instructions have a purpose after all.

I remember something the Apostle Paul said. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV.)

To live right without getting burnt you need the right directions.

Flush Out Engine Failure

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 11:08 pm

Want to avoid getting stranded by an overheated engine? Take a few minutes to perform a few quick cooling system maintenance activities.

Cooling system failure is a leading cause of engine-related breakdowns; however, a simple cooling system flush and fill or top-off can drastically minimize your risk. The task is especially important to perform before the cold weather months hit.

A flush and fill is crucial for your engine because it removes the dirt, dust and sediment that may damage the water pump and clog the engine water jacket and radiator. It takes just minutes to drain, flush and refill the cooling system, and the task can avoid unnecessary headaches in the long run.

“Proper preparation for cold weather ensures that you do not end up in a dangerous situation down the road,” said Richard Courtney, director of Prestone Products Research & Development and Technical Services.

Prestone manufactures a formula of antifreeze/coolant that can be used in all makes and models of cars and light trucks and mixes with any color antifreeze/coolant. The universal formula, Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant, eliminates confusion by taking the guesswork out of choosing the right product for your vehicle’s cooling system.

For drivers who have recently filled their antifreeze reservoirs, the only necessary task to prep your cooling system for cold weather may be a quick top-off. Motorists looking for the easiest top-off method can benefit from the Prestone 50/50 Pre-diluted Extended Life Antifreeze/ Coolant, which can be poured directly into the cooling system for protection in between your regularly scheduled flush and fills.

The Prestone team also recommends that all drivers consult their vehicle owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on the proper maintenance procedures and changeover intervals for their vehicle.

“Keeping your cooling system in top condition is vital for both your own personal safety and for the health of your engine,” Courtney said. “New antifreeze/coolant will add fresh life to your engine and helps keep you on the road.”

Product Diversity spurs cosmetics label growth

Demand for cosmetics and personal care products in general is flourishing, producing great opportunities for suppliers of all labelling products.

One of the driving forces behind this growth is the continual dynamism in the diversity of products in the end-user market, reports a new study by Frost Sullivan, the international marketing consulting company.

The cosmetics and personal care packaging market still displays significant potential for growth, says Dr Angela Gunning, research manager at Frost & Sullivan.

Overall, the market for cosmetics and personal care packaging is a mature one, though by no means stagnant, and revenue growth is expected to rise from US$1.74 billion in 1998 to US$2.10 billion by the end of the study period in 2005, mainly fuelled by the progressive diversity of products. Frost & Sullivans research comprises all those containers that are used for the primary packaging of products within the area of cosmetics and personal care.

Dr Gunning continues: The increasing variety of products is tied to the rising diversity of the product packaging. This triggers the growing need for more flexible production. Due to technological advancements, demands for enhanced flexibility are gradually being met. With a wider range of product designs, it is necessary for machinery to be capable of a larger number of shorter production runs.

Further factors stimulating growth in the European cosmetics and personal care packaging market include the buoyancy of the age range of the target end-user market and the improvement of the recycling potential of all packaging types.

In its review of product markets, Frost & Sullivans study confirms the dominance of the plastic bottles sector, accounting for the largest share of all the container types in the cosmetics and personal care packaging market in terms of both volume and revenues. Boosted by the general shift in the market away from glass, the anticipated growth of the male grooming sector and the growing recyclability of plastic bottles, this market is predicted to retain its leading position up to the end of the forecast period.

The growing preference for plastic over glass, recyclability of plastic and the overall rise in the diversity of end-user products have catapulted the plastic jars market into second place. This market has been showing positive growth in recent years and this trend is expected to continue. Meanwhile, awareness of environmental issues, coupled with the development of new market segments for tubes, coupled with the growth experienced in the market for laminate tubes, are expected to contribute to the continued successful performance of the cosmetics and personal care tubes product sector.

The largest producers of containers for the cosmetics and personal care market in terms of national markets are France and Germany, followed by Italy and the United Kingdom. Containers in the cosmetics and personal care market are increasingly customised and made-to-order, and there is a real desire for uniqueness in the packaging of cosmetics and personal care products, Frost & Sullivans study concludes.

Great Detailing Products For The Do It Yourselfer

Thanks for visiting and finding my article. What follows is information that I have pulled together from several sources. I hope you find it both interesting and helpful.

Who makes the best quality detailing products or where can I get professional quality detailing products for my own car seems to be what a lot of people are asking.

You may be able to get the best products on the market or the same products that auto detailers and the serious hobbyists use. It is quite well known that if you intend to win auto show competitions you need the best quality detailing products to get that mirror finish. Young men also know that if their car is not looking at its best, their chances of getting a date will be tough. No one wants to go out with someone with a dirty car. For most people, their car is a reflection of themselves and are very particular of its appearance.

Do it yourselfers have asked if there is a special product they can use on their car to make their baby shine. You can find some excellent products online and they will ship them direct to you. One line of products was the American Shine Product Line of auto detail products. It is easy to order online and it comes within a week. The ‘Gift Pack,’ the Tire Dressing and Carnauba Liquid Wax are all good.

After following the instructions, the results were great. The Rubber and Tire Dressing had good shine, but did not have the stickiness, which would attract dirt or blowing dust. The Carnauba Liquid wax was not difficult to use and gave a good shine, but you must make sure the surface has been properly cleaned first. To insure a proper wash, we used carnauba car wash soap, which is recommended.

Although these products are usually made for street rods, motorcycles and customs, these products also worked great on a motor home and a 4-door maroon Ford with mild oxidation. The results were all on their website stating they were pleased with the shine.

I want to thank you for visiting. Go ahead and look around for additional tips and information.

Respect Your Child’s Fever, But Please Don’t Fear It

Your one-year-old is unresponsive. Her eyes roll back. Her arms and legs stiffen. She begins to jerk and twitch. You are suddenly shaky yourself as panic and fear grab hold. You snatch her up in your arms and discover her skin is hot to the touch. You don’t understand. She hadn’t been sick–until now. You rush to the phone, but aren’t sure who to call–911, the doctor, your husband, your mother? By this time, the twitching has stopped, her muscles have relaxed, and her eyes have closed. Like a spring tornado, the convulsive episode came and went in a flash, leaving you with an unarousable child and a whole lot of questions, the first of which is, “What do I do now?”

Witnessing a febrile seizure is a frightening experience. As a parent, you are helpless to control the unfolding situation. I am reminded of my daughter’s seizure several years ago. We had packed everything in the apartment and were preparing to move into our first house the following day. Excitement filled the air. Our daughter was 15-months old at the time and she felt a little warm. But we couldn’t take her temperature or give her Tylenol because when I say everything was packed, I mean everything was packed.

The dinner hour beckoned, so my wife volunteered to swing by the drug store on her way to KFC. That was fine by me. Katie wasn’t exactly what you’d call a cuddly baby. The low-grade fever had relaxed her temperament, and I took advantage of the situation, rocking her to sleep in my arms.

While waiting for my wife and the chicken to return, Katie woke up. But her eyes weren’t looking at me. Instead, they were forced high up in the sockets as if she were inspecting the hairs on her brow. Her tiny body became stiff and started to twitch, and I realized she wasn’t really awake at all. I remember her body suddenly burning like fire and I remember feeling helpless to do much of anything about her fever or the seizure.

Typical of most febrile seizures, the episode passed quickly, but it left me with a lasting impression of the experience. I understand why fever, and the prospect of a resulting seizure, scares parents.

Yet, you really shouldn’t be afraid. Fever is a normal function of our body, aiding in the elimination of infection. It should prompt you to seek a medical opinion regarding the source of the fever, but it shouldn’t scare you. And why not?

Well, only 4% of the population will ever have a febrile seizure. That means your child has a 96% chance of never having a fever seizure, even with temperatures in the 104-105 degree range. The chances, however, do increase slightly if other children in the extended family have a history of seizing with fever.

Also keep in mind that there’s little you can do to prevent a febrile seizure. This is because most of them occur at the very onset of an illness, with the first temperature spike. In these cases, the seizure is the first sign your child has a problem.

When febrile seizures occur, they tend to be brief (a few minutes that seem like an eternity) and uncomplicated. Your child may be sleepier than usual for an hour or so after the episode. Also, having a febrile seizure increases the odds of having another one sometime in the next few years–about one-third of kids with a febrile seizure will have a repeat episode. Will your child go on to develop epilepsy (seizure without fever)? It’s unlikely. Only one in one-hundred kids with febrile seizures will go on to have a lifelong seizure disorder.

How about brain damage? Nope. Neither high fevers nor febrile seizures cause brain damage. However, brain damage can lead to fever and seizure.

So back to the question on every parent’s mind: What do I do during and after a febrile seizure. During the seizure, you want to make sure your child is in a safe place and breathing fine. If there are breathing difficulties, call 911. Start rescue breathing if your child is apneic or blue (a CPR course through the American Red Cross is a good idea for any parent). But realize this situation is extremely rare.

After the seizure, you should call your child’s doctor. He may have you go to the emergency room or might see you in the office.

Witnessing a febrile seizure is scary–take it from me, a Dad and Pediatrician who lived through one. But in the overwhelming majority of cases, all is well in the end. Sure, we treat fevers in kids, but our primary goal is making your child more comfortable, not preventing a seizure. God made fevers for a reason. They have a purpose. Since seizures are a rare occurrence with fever, and since they are generally brief and without complication when they do occur, you should respect your child’s fever, but please don’t fear it.

The Columnist in the Mousetrap

I am a voracious reader of the most convoluted and lexiphanic texts – yet, there is one author I prefer to most. She gives me the greatest pleasure and leaves me tranquil and craving for more when I am through devouring one of her countless tomes. A philosopher of the mundane, a scholar of death, an exquisite chronicler of decay and decadence – she is Dame Agatha Christie. I spend as much time wondering what so mesmerizes me in her pulp fiction as I do trying to decipher her deliciously contorted stratagems.

First, there is the claustrophobia. Modernity revolves around the rapid depletion of our personal spaces – from pastures and manors to cubicles and studio apartments. Christie – like Edgar Ellen Poe before her – imbues even the most confined rooms with endless opportunities for vice and malice, where countless potential scenarios can and do unfold kaleidoscopically. A Universe of plots and countervailing subplots which permeate even the most cramped of her locations. It is nothing short of consummate magic.

Then there is the realization of the ubiquity of our pathologies. In Christie’s masterpieces, even the champions of good are paragons of mental illness. Hercules Poirot, the quintessential narcissist, self-grooming, haughty, and delusional. Miss Marple, a schizoid busybody, who savors neither human company, nor her inevitable encounters with an intruding world. Indeed, it is deformity that gifts these two with their eerily penetrating insights into the infirmities of others.

Then, there is the death of innocence. Dame Agatha’s detective novels are quaint, set in a Ruritanian Britain that is no more and likely had never existed. Technologies make their debut: the car, the telephone, the radio, electric light. The very nature of evil is transformed from the puerile directness of the highway robber and the passion killer – to the scheming, cunning, and disguised automatism of her villains. Crime in her books is calculated, the outcome of plotting and conspiring, a confluence of unbridled and corrupted appetites and a malignant mutation of individualism. Her opus is a portrait of our age as it emerged, all bloodied and repellent, from the womb the dying Victorian era.

Christie’s weapons of choice are simple – the surreptitious poison, a stealthy dagger, the cocked revolver, a hideous drowning. Some acquaintance with the sciences of Chemistry and Physics is indispensable, of course. Archeology comes third. But Christie’s main concerns are human nature and morality. The riddles that she so fiendishly posits cannot be solved without taking both into account.

As Miss Marple keeps insisting throughout her numerous adventures, people are the same everywhere, regardless of their social standing, wealth, or upbringing. The foibles, motives, and likely actions of protagonists – criminals as well as victims – are inferred by Marple from character studies of her village folks back home. Human nature is immutable and universal is Christie’s message.

Not so morality. Formal justice is a slippery concept, often opposed to the natural sort. Life is in shades of gray. Murders sometimes are justified, especially when they serve to rectify past wrongs or prevent a greater evil. Some victims had it coming. Crime is part of a cycle of karmic retribution. The detective’s role is to restore order to a chaotic situation, to interpret reality for us (in an inevitable final chapter), and to administer true and impartial justice, not shackled by social or legalistic norms.

Thus, nothing is as it seems.

It is perhaps Christie’s greatest allure. Beneath the polished, petite-bourgeois, rule-driven, surface, lurks another world, replete with demons and with angels, volcanic passions and stochastic drives, the mirrors and the mirrored, where no ratio rules and no laws obtain. Catapulted into this nightmarish, surrealistic landscape, like the survivors of a shipwreck, we wander, bedazzled, readers and detectives, heroes and villains, damsels and their lovers, doomed to await the denouement. When that moment comes, redeemed by reason, we emerge, reassured, into our reinstated, ordered, Before Christ(ie) existence.

Her novels are the substance of our dreams, woven from the fabric of our fears, an open invitation to plunge into our psyches and courageously confront the abyss. Hence Christie’s irresistibility – her utter acquaintance with our deepest quiddity. Who can forgo such narcissistic pleasure? Not your columnist, for sure!

MBA basics

The MBA is perhaps the most coveted course in todays world. This course tops the list of courses almost in all the developed and developing countries across the globe. The enthusiasm for the course has brought in many small private institutes etc. to offer this course. However, only those students who have obtained the MBA degree from some recognized eminent university find the best of placements. So the institute or the university is the first factor for a successful career in this field. This article will educate you about the various issues like finance, strategy to study, interview etc. related to choosing MBA as a profession.

In todays competitive world there are no shortcuts. The student willing to take admission in one of the best institutes either in Asia or abroad, need to study hard and get the good grades. 3.0 to 4.0 are the minimum grades required at the undergraduate grade point average (GPA).

Most of the MBA schools or colleges adjudicate the caliber of the student via the GMAT or The Graduate Management Admissions Test exam. This test is to estimate the individuals knowledge of English, Math and Analytical writing skills. The verbal or English section comprises of 41 questions to be answered within 75 minutes. The questions like correcting the hidden grammatical mistakes etc. The Math section has 37 questions and same 75 minutes. Questions are on various mathematical topics like percentage, ratio and so forth. The writing analysis is based on writing two essays on different issues.

The school and university depend on the grades that you get in the exam. Good grades will fetch you a deemed university while poor ones may not.

MBA programs are full time and part time and within this program there are many choices. Like you can take up finance management, HR, etc. it is at the discretion of the student to decide which course to go for.

Once you have made a preference for the course, the time comes to look at the fee structure. Usually the MBA schools charge a high fee which is not within the reach of students. In this case they look for other financial aids. Many schools offer scholarships, grants etc. that can be looked up to. Else the loan facility is always available. The loan providing banks and companies also consider the grades and the institution that recommends the name of the student. The successful schools are known for producing productive students who can repay the loan conveniently with their salaries.

The FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Students, loan offered by the federal government is doing remarkable job in this area. However, due to the popularity of the loan, the application should be sent as soon as possible.

Many MBA schools ask for recommendation letters. This is in order to justify a students authenticity. In this case the letter should be taken by an honored and known authority whose recommendation lifts your name in the eyes of its seekers.

The school life is followed by hunt for a job. If you have passed from a top most school, job is not an issue; still you need to be prepared to win your contenders. When going for an interview wear decent clothes that are not too jazzy and funky and colorful. Practice properly with a friend or family member before the day of interview. Dont forget to take a copy of resume and cover letter along with your certificates. You need to be familiar with each and every word of your resume and cover letter. Dont be nervous and maintain a calm composure. Try replying in a prudent manner to all their questions. Even if you make a mistake, dont let it affect your rest of the answers and your attitude.

So go ahead and chase your dreams!

Can Andy Roddick Win Another Slam?

For over 20 years now many Coaches and National Tennis Federations around the world, decided to develop players the easy way, with one-mode robot like baseline tennis. Fortunately 2 players survived this onslaught and have kept the interest alive in the serve and volley all court game, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer with Andy Roddick in a grey zone between these two great players.

Due to that one dimensional teaching of tennis by coaches and federations,, today everyone that faces Roger has the jitters. They have no answers or solutions for the challenges Roger presents. This has awakened every expert in the world to talk wonders about the “all court game”! The very same game that 20/30 years ago they themselves almost killed with new rules, heavier balls, bigger balls, slower balls etc…and by following certain “tennis gurus” with poor coaching/development examples or tennis knowledge. Remember that everyone turned their backs on the teachings of a great Master of the all court training the late Harry Hopman “The Fox”.

Now back to Andy Roddick; all these technical Coaching trials at bettering his backhand or his volleys or his returns are purely making him lose confidence…. now everyone is talking about Andy Roddick developing a more all court game! Amen! Pete Sampras was saying that with his game style to all coaches for 15 years!

With Andy Roddick it would be foolish to tinker with the core of his game at this point of his career. Those things (weak parts of his game) will better themselves as he grows as a professional, practices and gets smarter, eg. experience and more self-confidence. Nevertheless the weaker parts of his game will always be “weaknesses”.

If you all remember Stefen Edberg had a “poor forehand” and a not so good forehand volley! The same was for Jimmy Connors with his “poor mid-court low forehand” and “weak serve”, or with Guillermo Villas “no serve” and weak volleys, or Michael Chang trying to get a “Bigger service” all his career and last, Ivan Lendl trying to stop being a “chicken” or to better his volleys to win Wimbledon (I guess Lendl should have let Tony Roche volley for him at Wimbledon when needed!…not to mention the mental debacle in 1989 at Rolland Garros). Yet, these players turned out to be great champions even though those weaknesses followed and pestered them throughout their careers.

Then Sergio what’s the secret? There is a simple secret:
Top class players learn to compensate or hide their weaknesses the best they can sometimes even with ruses! For example, you problably may not remember an Italian player called Corrado Barazzutti, but the his ploy was to look like a loser to you, act like a loser, look miserable, despondent, get down on himself. He walked with his head slightly down almost inside his stooped shoulders, all in all he was the antithesis of Dr. James E. Loehr (famous sports psychologist), stay positive, I love the battle, pumping fists, agressive, mighty fighter full of adreneline type. But, boy you miss a bit and Corrado “Mama mia” Barrazutti took you to the cleaners and you were on the next airplane home or to the next tournament. Corrado was a great competitor and athlete. He made it to the respectable career ATP high ranking of 7 in the World with many brilliant wins!

Great players learn to play on their strengths and base their games on their strengths and they win the most by NOT deviating from what they do best, whatever that is. That is the secret! Remember Boris “BOOM BOOM!” Becker? Now imagine if Ion Tiriac or Bobby Brett had told Boris, “Boris, you have a great 1st serve but, you need to get a much higher percentage of first serves in”…. you get the idea, we would never had gotten to know “BOOM BOOM” Becker and he probably would never had won Wimbledon either!
Now to our young friend Andy Roddick, coaching and over coaching has taken away from Andy Rodick what were his greatest tools and what I call his core strengths or weapons:

-The punishing aces (he hits a lot less aces now then 4 or 5 years ago!).

- The risk-taking forcing second service (when he first came onto the scene his second serve was a weapon, today it is not!). Remember how Pete Sampras used is second serve as a weapon!

- The punishing shots inside the court. Today Andy is playing 80% of his aggressive or defensive shots 12 to 15 feet behind the baseline! He basicly runs unecessary miles that take away much needed energy for further winning matches and for a long tennis season.

What does Roddick need to do? Forget about the Coaching and the experts! Go with his instincts, his power game, his natural strengths:

- Use his biggest weapons at all time, be it big first services, big second serves or serve and volley occasionally.

- Stop playing 15 feet behind the baseline! Play 3 to 6 feet from the baseline and get inside the court at every opportunity he gets and hit the big forehand WINNERS! Never give up an inch!

- Go to the net and mix the approach shots with short fades or disguised drop-shots and mix solid volleying with drop-angled-volleys.

- When attacking go 85% of the times up the line use very few cross court approaches.

- Never worry about the volley, if he gets inside the court, he will get easy enough put away volleys.

- Return closer to the baseline and darn it, he must get inside the court on those second serves pound them or go to the net and put some kind of pressure on the other guys serves (chip & charge you name it!).

- From point one get ahold of his opponents and rattle them with his sheer physical power and never let go. Like Jimmy Connors use to do with his strokes.

- Take control of the center of the tennis court and of the match; mentally, physically and with his shots.

Finally, in the grand slams he has to be able to do this at all times 3 sets in a row or 5 intercalated if he is forced to. He needs to decrease the amount of rounds with long five set matches to 3 sets. He also has to increase the level of his self-belief, concentration and general stamina!

Easier said then done, but I believe that the young man can do it!

Better Typography and More Readable Text in PowerPoint

PowerPoint is, fundamentally, a tool for communication, and the heart of that communication is written words. As many charts, videos and illustrations a presentation might have, without text these add up to little more than a collection of disjointed elements pasted between slide transitions.

Words remain the glue that ties information together. Because of this, good typography is as important — if not more so — than any visual element in a presenter’s PowerPoint file. (This not to say good presentation is a substitute for weak content; after all, content is king.)

“Typography” is a medium-independent term used to describe how type is presented. This includes everything from mixing fonts to choosing colors and point sizes to laying elements on a page in certain relation to other objects.

Good typography doesn’t happen by accident — it is a skill that is developed through practice and experimentation. Just as there are some general, fundamental guidelines that are as applicable to presentation software as they are to billboards and annual reports, there are a few typographical principles that relate directly to PowerPoint alone. Adhering to these simple strategies can result in a much more polished and professional-looking piece.

1. Fonts should never be less than 12 points in size. Even with substantial magnification over a projection system, people have difficulty focusing on smaller type. This really works against you anytime the audience needs to carefully read something, since most of their effort is spent squinting and leaning forward and not on actually understanding the content. The only exception to the 12-point rule would be small copyright information, dates or watermarks that are not related to the primary content.

2. Bigger is better. Headlines should float around 20-24 pt, larger if needed. Body copy generally works well in the 16-18 range, although 14-point is not uncommon for squeezing a few extra lines in. Headline point size should never be smaller than the content size.

3. Don’t be afraid of leading. “Leading” is the term for adjusting the space between lines, and can be found under Format > Line Spacing. This does not have to be drastic; often, a subtle 1.1 – 1.5 can really open up the design on a page and make long blocks of text much easier to read.

4. Stick with the standard font faces that are included on a typical Windows machine. These include Times New Roman, Impact, Arial, Verdana, Georgia and Trebuchet. Using off-beaten fonts that you’ve installed may make your presentation more visually interesting, but it will cause numerous problems when moving the piece between different computers. While these non-standard fonts can conceivably be moved with your file, the end product is rarely worth the resulting headaches.

5. When choosing fonts, it is often better to stay with sans-serif typefaces like Arial and Verdana. Their blocky, minimal nature makes them ideal for headline applications, where they can be displayed at larger sizes and still retain maximum readability. In PowerPoint, it is even more important to use sans-serif fonts in bullets, paragraphs and other small point size applications. Serif fonts like Times New Roman and Georgia are more decorative, and while they perform superbly in the printed realm (look no further than The New York Times for endless columns of the Times face), study after study demonstrate they hinder reading speed and comprehension when presented on screen.

6. Pick font colors that contrast with the background:

* For white backgrounds, black and dark versions of red and blue work exceptionally well.

* For dark backgrounds, like black or rich blues, white is ideal, but options such as yellow or very pale, icy blues can achieve interesting and often captivating color combinations.

* A good visual trick is to use a background color that accepts both white and black font colors. Dark oranges, rich greens (apple green especially) and even certain blues can be excellent choices for the design-adventurous.

* Color combinations to avoid: Black and red, in any situation. Color-similar combinations, such as orange text on yellow backgrounds, or light blue text on dark blue backgrounds.

7. Since PowerPoint works so well with bullet points, it is a presentation technique widely adopted as a means of displaying important information in bite-sized chunks. But consider exploring different typographic solutions for bullets; small changes can often encourage better readability and audience interest. There are several techniques that I have successfully used.

* Consider making the actual bullet a different color than the text. For instance, if your text is black, a medium gray bullet might work well. They serve to primarily guide the eye from line to line, so it is not always critical to make them as visually important as the text.

* Also, making the active bullet line a different color might be a good way to reinforce what you are saying. If each bullet appears manually, dependent on where you are in your speech, this can be a subtle but powerful means of reminding the audience what you are talking about.

* Also, try using different shapes for bullets! PowerPoint’s flexible options allows a variety of pre-installed symbols, or even an imported graphic, to be used in place of the rather dry default circles.

8. Consistency. This is, without a doubt, the most important typographic tip in any medium, PowerPoint or other. Design your master template and stick to it. If you use 24-point Arial as a headline font, 16-point Verdana as the body font and a customized set of bullets that change color, use that combination through the entire presentation. And not just sizes and colors, but also positioning. The first sign of amateur PowerPoint is text fields jumping from spot to spot across different slides.
